Does Taylor Swift Fake Live Performances?

Foo Fighters singer Dave Grohl called out Taylor Swift for apparently not really performing live at her own show.  He noted the lack of “errors” in Swift’s show, a play on the name of her tour, “Eras.”  He’s quite right, there is a suspicious lack of human error in Swift’s performances.  Though it hadn’t occurred to me previously, I am now starting to doubt the extent to which Swift even sings at her so-called live performances.

Grohl said at Wembley Stadium in London Saturday night:

“I tell you, man, you don’t want to suffer the wrath of Taylor Swift...So we like to call our tour the ‘Errors Tour.’ We’ve had more than a few eras, and more than a few fucking errors as well. Just a couple.”

Why do I say this?  Well, note that she’s running around, jumping up and down, but you don’t hear any sign of this in her “singing.”  There’s no stammering for breath; rather, everything sounds mechanical like you’re listening to her album.  This is despite the fact that Swift is dancing and moving–not that she’s a great dancer; but nonetheless, she is moving quite a bit.

In Swift’s response, she said onstage something to the effect that her band is playing for over two hours.  I’m sure they are.  You can hear live drums playing, sure.  But there is also a lot of backing tracks, a lot of electronic elements, and a lot of prerecorded backing vocals.  So basically…it’s fake.

But this won’t upset Swift’s fanbase, the liberal white women who seem to have found some kind of inspiration in Swift’s insipid stylings.  So be it.  But Grohl, particularly in his work with Nirvana, has more a claim to artistry than she.
