CNN is a rabidly anti-Trump network, so to some it seemed strange that Trump would agree to their hosting the presidential debate Thursday. Put that to the side. Now it turns out that not only does CNN control the debate, it is seeking to control the distribution of video footage of the debate via DMCA law, which relates to copyright law.
However, Elon Musk has come to the rescue: He will not honor CNN’s ridiculous prohibition of people clipping the debates, as is obviously allowed under Fair Use.
Clips of a presidential debate absolutely belong in the public square, under fair use, which allows “limited portions of a work including quotes, for purposes such as commentary, criticism, news reporting, and scholarly reports.” It’s called political commentary, CNN. Don’t worry, your logo will still be there. It’s still your footage. But we’re allowed to discuss it.
As Revolver News puts it:
“This is one of those moments when freedom-loving folks should be glad Elon Musk stepped up and purchased X.”
Thanks to Elon Musk, we will indeed be able to view as many clips as our hearts desire on X. Musk posted on X Tuesday:
“The public has a right to see Presidential debates however they would like. DMCA does not apply.”
I concur Mr. Musk. And nice try, CNN.
