Charlie Kirk might have offended women when he suggested that 30-something single females have less value on the dating market, that they are “not at their prime,” and that they were falsely led to a sense of security by pursuing their careers. He further explained that women in their 30s are “not as attractive in the dating pool” as women in their 20s. How dare Kirk imply that men like younger women!
But seriously, what is this controversy really about?
What Kirk said is basically to repeat a common knowledge, or at least a common saying in the online right, which is that feminism has subverted women in a sense; in that they are tricked into pursuing life choices which don’t really serve them. Whether or not you agree with that– ok, it is what it is.
Whether women want to pursue careers or be housewives and mothers, it’s all the same to me at this point. Whether Kirk might have a point in terms of their own happiness is another matter.
Some people are trying to “own” Charlie Kirk by saying that actually he’s not very attractive, and so who is he to attack women’s looks? First of all, Kirk’s looks are irrelevant to his point. But on the subject, basically he’s a normal looking guy, he’s tall, so there’s that, and he’s slim. So let’s not act like Kirk is some kind of troll, because he’s not. Maybe he’s not a model either, but again, that’s pretty irrelevant.
The reaction from female conservative influencers was hysterical. They said something like, “Hey Republicans, you’re never going to get women to vote for you if this is the kind of stuff you say.” But let’s think about the implications of that. This is to say that in order for women to vote for Republicans, we have to flatter their vanity. We have to validate all their choices regardless. We have to pretend that men actually prefer older women (although I do not find myself inordinately focused on youth). We’re advised of a similar strategy for other ethnic groups. Basically, we’re told to maintain an obsequious posture towards every group, except men, and especially not towards white men.
If Charlie Kirk upset some people, it doesn’t really bother me. And I doubt it affects any election. If the price of winning elections is lying to women and telling them everything they want to hear, I feel that in some way, we’ve already lost.
