Ever since Mia Khalifa seemed to mock the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7th, her commercial viability has been hit pretty hard: she was fired from Playboy. What’s more, she was recently harassed at an airport by an Iranian, presumably Jewish woman who followed and hectored her. So after being canceled and harassed, when exactly will we be happy with the persecution of this woman?
Who is Mia Khalifa– because of course you wouldn’t be familiar with that name. Khalifa herself would be quick to tell you that she’s a former porn star, ten years out of the business. She might not exactly be ashamed at having been a porn star, but it seems like she wants to continue her life in a more normal, mainstream fashion. In fact, if you didn’t know she was a porn star, you might say, “Oh, here’s an attractive young woman with a sassy and spunky personality.”
Anyway, let’s take a look at the clip of Kalifa being harassed at Miami airport:
People on Twitter who presumably speak Farsi said that the woman is an Iranian Jew, based on her dialogue with her son. Now some people are saying that her son seemed embarrassed; he’s hardly an enthusiastic participant in his mom’s aggressive confrontation. But if you watch the clip, after conversing with his mom, the son started filming the interaction between his mom and Khalifa on his phone. So you could say he is collaborating with his mom in harassing Khalifa.
But is this really harassment? Ultimately, yes. Khalifa, who is a Lebanese-American, is being harassed because she has a pro-Palestinian perspective on the Israel/ Gaza conflict. She expressed it in a crass way, but she already lost her job in the media over it, so to confront her in public seems like overkill. It was certainly out of bounds to mock the Oct 7 terrorist attack. But there’s a lot of not nice things happening in Gaza, and you don’t see anyone being canceled for mocking Palestinians.
